I’ve been fortunate to not be in a situation where I’ve ever over heard ill will directed toward me. However I have been in a situation where I made a realization that a young lady I thought was a friend was not and of course; I’ll explain.
So.
I won’t say her name, it’s one of only two female names forbidden in my home. I will say that while her name is found in the bible, her actions were in no way deserving of praise.
Back to the story.
I was leaving Gym class and heading to Bio I think. The gym lockers in our school were in a weird place in the building and it forced us to take the back stairs which were a notorious hang out / cut / make out spot. I heard my friend’s voice but decided to wait it out as I didn’t recognize the voice of the person she was talking to.
Then, things escalated quickly.
I’d recently confided in said friend that I like a boy. (*cough* A boy who is now my Husband. *cough*) It took me a long time to admit to another person, so it was a relatively big deal. Realizing it had been hard enough, sharing was damn near an act of God. And what did I over here? The story of how she kissed him earlier that day. Lady that I was, I didn’t let her go any further and slowly and deliberately walked up the flight of stairs that they were on while pausing slightly in front of her.
Needless to say, I never spoke to her again. She tried to contact me a few years later, long after we graduated High School and that didn’t work for obvious reasons.
I thought that it was a basic Girlfriend / Girlfriend rule that you don’t go after boys that you know a friend likes. It was flagrant disrespect. Also, it took so long for me to open up to another girl and this crushing defeat lay waste to the countless friendships with women that were ruined because of the breaking of this rule.
It’s funny now because we’re married but at the time, I was barely comfortable at the notion that I was falling in love with my friend.
It was the Holy Grail of over heard conversations for what was going on at the time. Also, the title is a reference for this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AIdXisPqHc
